Three Planning Practices, and the Questions to Ask Next

  • Start from what you already know. Build the forecast from historical actuals, strip out the one-offs, and put your attention on the assumptions that are actually changing.
  • Connect costs to farm drivers. Where $/head, $/hectare, and % of an account do more work than a fixed dollar figure, and which assumptions are worth the effort.
  • See funding pressure months ahead. What a useful cash-flow review looks at: forecast cash position, seasonal peaks in expenditure, overdraft limits, available headroom, and the periods where facilities could be exceeded.
  • The six-month conversation. The same overdraft problem found six months early, and what the client can still do about it at that point.
  • Keep the plan alive. The plan, actuals, variance, reforecast, advise cycle, and how a change from budget becomes information you can use rather than something to explain at year end.
  • Ten questions for your next review. A checklist you can take straight into a client meeting.

Who It's For

For Accountants and Advisers Working with Farming Clients

  • You've had the year-end conversation where the overdraft was already at its limit. The financial problem was the same six months earlier. The options weren't.
  • You rebuild client budgets from a blank spreadsheet each year. The playbook starts from the actuals already sitting in the accounting file.
  • You advise across livestock, cropping, and mixed operations. The driver-based approach covers $/head and $/hectare, so it applies whatever your clients run.
  • You want a planning process you can repeat rather than reinvent. The playbook sets out the same three practices whether it's the first client or the fortieth.
  • You work independently as a farm business consultant. Nothing here assumes you hold the compliance relationship. It assumes you're the one being asked what happens next.
