"We won't know our production numbers in detail until the accountant runs them at year end."

Every season, US farmers make some of their most significant calls without a clear view of their financial position.

The problem is that while accounting data has gotten easier to track, production still lives in old spreadsheets, on paper, or in the farmer's head. It takes time to update the farm's true financial position, time usually no one has spare. So when a decision arrives that needs those numbers, they aren't ready.

But farmers know they need visibility, which is why a growing number are doing things differently. They're working on a platform built on live data, with a budget that tracks the full season, a forward plan to measure against, and a clear view of today's position.

That platform is Figured.

How Figured Connects Production to Your Financial Plan

Cropping

Crop Activity Tracked From Planting to Sale

Set up production trackers by field and crop type, then record activity as the season progresses. Figured's Inventory Tracker keeps harvested crops valued at cost, from harvest through to sale, so you know what's in storage and what it's worth. Next, the Allocator assigns direct costs to production centers, giving you cost of production by enterprise. When it's time to decide whether to hold or sell, the financial picture should reflect what you've been recording.

Livestock

Livestock Movements and Cashflow β€” Together

Figured's Livestock Tracker records births, deaths, purchases, aging, and sales per head, with each movement feeding directly into the farm's financial plan. Your stock position and your financial position stay in step.

Mixed Farming

One Connected Plan, Split by Enterprise

Figured brings together both sides of a mixed farming operation, building a single live financial picture that digs into the details.

Production trackers feed livestock movements and crop activity straight into the financial plan, which Figured then allocates by income, cost, and enterprise type. When it comes time for planning, reporting, or just checking in on the business, you can see both the performance of the farm as a whole and what each individual enterprise is contributing.

Custom Reporting

Reports That Show the Whole Farm Picture

With production and financial data in one platform, Figured reports take into account the whole farm picture. Everything you need to report to the rest of the family, trust, governance board, or lender is generated from data that's been building throughout the year, ensuring it accurately reflects what's really happening on the farm. Plus, Figured's powerful custom report builder, Reporting Studio, expands what you can do with reporting. Build fully tailored, highly visual report templates then watch as the data populates automatically. Auto Analyst even writes explanations for you, saving you time in the office writing it all up yourself.

If you're not measuring what you're doing, you can't manage it. And Figured has certainly given us a greater ability to manage things, because we are measuring so much more.

With Figured, I feel like it gives you a bit more clarity going forward. Running the numbers takes the guesswork out of forecasting β€” if you change one figure, it flows through to the next, so you're not wondering if your spreadsheet formula's correct. My advice for other farmers: get on board, have a try. It'll give you a lot more confidence and a lot more time.

The beauty of Figured is that it helps you look forward. It gives you a picture, and it might be six to 12 months down the road of where you're going. If you don't like that picture, you've got that time to change. It's just better than looking back at last year's numbers when it's a bit late to make a change.

Questions

Production Management in Figured β€” FAQ

Figured supports production tracking for livestock, cropping, and mixed farming operations.

The Livestock Tracker records stock movements, and the Crop Tracker handles seasonal activity down to the field and crop type level. Plus Inventory Trackers help you track stock on hand and create valuations based on current data.

From here, production quantities across all farm types connect directly to the year's budget and live cashflow data from Xero or QuickBooks Online, linking on-farm activity to real financial performance in one platform.

While you can absolutely use Figured by yourself as a farmer, we do recommend checking to see if your accountant or advisor is already using it.

Getting your production trackers configured correctly, connecting to your accounting software, and making sure the opening position is right all benefit from someone who knows the platform well. Trying to do it without an advisor tends to mean a slower start and more things to unpick later.

Once you're set up, though, you have your own access to the platform and can see your financial and production data at any time β€” not just when your accountant runs a report. The goal is for both you and your accountant to have access to the same live data, which you can view at the same time.

Figured connects to QuickBooks Online and Xero. If your farm accounting runs through either of those, you can use Figured on top of it.

If you're on an alternative accounting system, or using spreadsheets or paper-based records, you'd need to migrate to one of the supported systems first. While migrating to a modern platform can seem daunting, most farms never go back β€” there's a reason they're so popular.

It may help to talk to a Figured-enabled accountant about what you need to do next to upgrade your accounting system, then get onto Figured.

Your job is keeping the underlying data current β€” reconciling bank transactions in your accounting software and recording farm movements as they happen. The more current that is, the more useful Figured is for both of you.

Your accountant's job is to work with that data inside Figured. They configure your farm's trackers, manage the planning and reporting, and handle the year-end financial work: valuations, accruals, and the reports that go to the IRS and the bank. If they also offer advisory, they can help you plan ahead too β€” using Figured's budgeting and scenario modeling tools.

When both sides have done their part, the conversation between you shifts from what happened last year, to what's going on right now and, more importantly, what might happen next.

Figured is a monthly subscription, and the cost depends on which product tier your accountant sets you up on β€” Farm Reporter for reporting, or Farm Manager if you want planning and forecasting on top of that.

Most farmers don't manage the subscription directly. Your accountant or advisor handles the setup, and depending on how they work, they'll either pass the cost on to you separately or fold it into your advisory fees. The best person to ask is your accountant β€” they can tell you exactly what applies to your farm before you commit to anything.
